Hmmm… news to me! Further research revealed that this is a project that’s been “in development” for a number of years, and Mary J Blige has indeed been tapped to star as the songstress and activist – according to an old MTV report. IMDB Pro also confirms. And The Hollywood Reporter mentioned the project on its website today.
The film is said to be an MTV Films/Paramount Pictures project, which will focus on Simone’s relationship with Paris-based manager Clifton Henderson.
Cynthia Mort, who’s credits include writing and producing several episodes of popular TV series, Roseanne, and Will And Grace, is listed at the screenwriter on the project, which is currently untitled.
So, all signs show that this baby is going to fly at some point, with 2012 listed as the planned release date.
My immediate reaction to Blige starring in the role was to cringe. Obviously, there are those who’d prefer that musicians stick to making music, leaving the acting jobs for actors. But, I say, if she can act, and she can pull off a hell of a performance, then why not? Although, I haven’t seen her act, so, I can’t really say whether she’s the “right” person for the job. There are others who I’d rather see in a role like this, and Blige’s name isn’t anywhere close to that list.
She certainly doesn’t have Simone’s voice… those distinct resonant chords that I’d recognize anywhere. However, if there is any singing, as I’m guessing there will be, which is partly why Blige was cast, I’d guess she’d be lip-syncing. But, I don’t know.
Stay tuned… this may end up never even seeing the light of day!
