We’ve all been there. Sitting at our desks at work, fantasizing what it would be like to work from home, or run our own empires. Maybe one day. Maybe when I can figure out what I want to do with my life. Maybe, you are an Accountant by day but hate it; or are just very bored with it. If you only knew what your passion was you could move forward towards your goal of owning your own business. Here are five tips to help you discover your passion.
1. Daydream. In your daydreams, what does your ideal life look like? Write it down, every detail. Include things that seem unimportant or even things that seem unobtainable.
2. Watch TV. A lot of television may seem like a waste of time. But hidden in those reality shows or soap operas are little nuggets of inspiration. For instance, I got one aspect of my business from watching reality shows…at least the concept of them and now my new web show will be released this fall!
3. Take aspects from your day job. What do you like about your day job that you can use in your business? My day job as a Career Counselor was often challenging and the required paperwork was tedious. (we contracted with the Federal Government) But, I enjoyed helping people identify their career paths and push them to succeed.
4. Read magazines. One of my favorite magazines had a section for women that were working a “side hustle” while still working for “the man.” J I read these over and over again. I saved each issue, highlighted, circled, made notes; etc. Although there may not be an exact business idea, the point is to get your juices flowing.
5. Scour the internet for business ideas. Join sites like Ladies Who Launch to network, learn and be inspired. Researching the internet obviously lends itself to tremendous potential.
Final thoughts: Create something you wish already existed. Create projects you wish you could be involved with-for example; I always loved performing in plays. There weren’t a whole lot of opportunities for Black female actress locally, so I produced my own play. Once you get to know me, you will learn that I am a “just do it” type of person. If you need it, if you want it, if you wish it existed, you do it. You create it. You invent it.
Great site. A lot of useful information here. I’m sending it to some friends!
